Each model is different and will highlight the importance of designing a system, that meets the unique needs of that organisation’s culture. Jane Fawcett Presentation content: History, practice, procedures, protocols, people, management, working with a major incident in Istanbul. Biography: One of the leading trauma practitioners in the UK, Jane has worked for nearly 20 years in the field of workplace counselling. Originally a trainer and personnel specialist, she moved into employee counselling in 1986 with a London local authority. Latterly she has specialised in workplace strategies and interventions in the trauma field. In 1993 she joined the pioneering HSBC trauma team. Since 1998 she has managed and developed the service. It has become one of the most innovative and widely respected trauma teams in the UK, playing a central role in the bank’s response to critical incidents. Jane also leads ACW’s trauma network and is an invaluable source of advice and support for trauma practitioners nationally. Alison Dunn Presentation content: Introduction – brief outline of London Underground issues with trauma. Description of the approach to managing trauma on primary, secondary and tertiary levels:
Biography: Alison is Head of the Counselling and Trauma Service, part of the Occupational Health Department at London Underground. In addition to her counselling diploma, Alison was awarded a Masters degree in psychological counselling and psychotherapy in 2000. Her research project evaluated the impact of the counselling service at London Underground on employee wellbeing and work performance. Having worked as a trauma specialist and senior counsellor in the team before taking on her current role, Alison has thorough experience of providing counselling in an organisational setting, and managing a workplace counselling service. Based on her experience of working with trauma, she has developed a new model of trauma counselling for working with clients in the immediate aftermath of a traumatic incident – Trauma Aftercare: A Four Stage Model. Alison has written about the model in Thom Spiers’ book – Trauma: A Practitioner’s Guide to Counselling. Dr Steve Boorman MBBS MRCGP FFOM Presentation content: Short outline of Royal Mail’s approach to care and support for employees who are victims of trauma. Description of our welfare and occupational health approaches, debriefing and counselling provision and the work we are undertaking to understand the effectiveness of key elements of our post trauma care approach. Biography: Steve is an experienced consultant in occupational health, holding specialist accreditation in both general practice and in occupational health. Steve is director of corporate social responsibility, and chief medical adviser to Royal Mail Group. In this role he is responsible for the occupational health and welfare provision to one of the largest employers in the UK. His role also includes responsibility for health, safety, social policy and the environment in a complex and diverse business, the largest single employer of men in the UK. Steve holds honorary appointments as a senior clinical lecturer, with the IOM in Birmingham and as an appeal board referee under the merchant shipping regulations. He chairs the diploma in occupational medicine management committee on behalf of the faculty of Occupational Medicine, and is a fellow of the faculty. Steve is a past president of the Royal Society of Medicine’s section of occupational medicine. Steve has held previous posts as Medical Adviser to Secretary of State for Transport, and as locum chief medical adviser to DETR. Jean Thomas Presentation content: An overview of the Metropolitan Police Service’s delivery of trauma and crisis management and its plan for occupational health support for its staff in the event of major or catastrophic incident. Biography: With an occupational health background of some 17 years, Jean is now head of nursing and counselling for the Metropolitan Police Service. Her key responsibilities are developing ‘tools for the jobs’ that nurses and welfare counsellors deliver, establishing and monitoring professional standards, recruitment, and practitioners’ in-house development. Jean is a key player in MPS Trauma Support and Post Shooting Support programmes and developing plans for the OH response to major/catastrophic incidents.
