Conference 2005 ACW
Conference 2005 Chair's Introduction and Welcome I would like to invite you to attend our conference in London this year. The thinking behind this conference is that many organisations increasingly have to deal with trauma in the workplace. Violent attacks on staff are common. Personal assault, serious verbal abuse, attending disturbing scenes of death or destruction and witnessing traumatic events in the workplace, such as suicides or accidents, all take their toll. Organisations have a vital role to play in response and need to discharge their legal duty of care with careful thought. This conference aims to go beyond the media debate over whether psychological debriefing works or not and will equip delegates with practical models of trauma support that have been used by leading organisations. The conference is for counsellors, trauma practitioners, HR managers, health and safety, occupational health, coaches and those responsible for implementing trauma policies. Our three keynote speakers will each talk about their experiences. Dr Jo Rick – Jo will provide an introduction and overview of what trauma is and will highlight the latest trauma research findings relevant to trauma in the workplace. Mark Brayne – Mark will draw on his experience as a journalist to highlight how organisations need to carefully consider the prevailing culture when introducing a trauma policy. He will emphasise the importance of involving managers and peers to make the culture more psychologically robust. Lisa Potts – Lisa will talk from her personal experience of being savagely attacked with a machete, which was reported widely by the media, when working as a nursery nurse in a school and will comment on what victims of trauma need at such a difficult time. I am delighted that PRG will be supporting this year’s conference. I do hope you are able to join us for what promises to be a thought-provoking and highly informative day. Best wishes
